Finding Space on the Canvas: Guide to Art Therapy
Through art therapy, we learn to take internal feelings and turn them into colour and shape. Professional counselling and art therapy provides a stable, safe space where your feelings can be accepted and transformed.
What Art Therapy Really Looks Like
Before we dive in, you might be wondering: what exactlyis art therapy? Simply put, it is a form of counselling that blendspsychological theory and different approaches with creative expression. You donot need to be "good at art" or have any previous experience, becauseit isn't about judging the final art product, nor is it a test of yourtechnical skills.
In a clinical session, a professional art therapistguides you to use drawing, sculpting, or any medium you prefer to turn theabstract topics into visible shapes. Because every person’s journey is unique, these interventions and approaches shift and evolve based on what you need andare comfortable with in the moment. The art therapist works alongside you tofind the specific tools and creative pace that feel most comfortable for yourexploration.
It often reveals a side of ourselves we haven't metyet, like a version of our story that words haven't been able to tell. Try tothink of the artwork not as a project to be evaluated, but as a mirror thatreflects something we've never seen. It offers a clear, honest reflection ofthe inner feelings or quiet wonderings we usually keep buried beneath the noiseof daily life.
Getting the Inside Out
One of the key concepts behind this visual process is"externalization." When we feel anxious or low, those emotions canfeel like a tangled knot deep inside us, so intertwined with our identity thatwe feel like we are the anxiety itself.
By giving stress a color, a texture, and a physicalplace on the page, you strip away its power as an invisible force. It stopsbeing something that swallows you up and becomes a concrete object you canfinally observe. In the quiet space between you and the paper, you can look atthose feelings with curiosity rather than fear of the unknown. This distanceprovides something workable for us to talk about in a session. Instead oftrying to describe a vague, heavy feeling, we can discuss how we can interact withthis feeling and transform it into a positive one. This shift creates amuch-needed and safe space that offers a bit of breathing room where you areslowly building autonomy of your experience.
Visual Clues and the Power of Metaphor
Art also acts as a trail of visual clues, helping uscatch subtle signals we might otherwise miss. One of the examples is the"Bridge Drawing." When a therapist asks you to draw a bridge, thatbridge often becomes a metaphor for how you are moving from your past towardyour future.
As we look at the details together, the left side ofthe paper often represents where you are coming from, while the right sidepoints toward where you are going. The bridge itself tells a story. Does itlook sturdy? What is it made of? And most importantly, where did you drawyourself? Are you walking across it, or are you standing on the bank, hesitating?
Opening a Window Through Metaphor
These metaphors are incredibly valuable in our clinicalsessions. Someone might realize they drew a bridge with no exit, or that thewater underneath is so wavy they feel afraid to cross.
Talking about a "broken bridge" or"rough water" is often much easier than talking directly about life’sfrustrations, as it lowers our defenses. Instead of a direct analysis, itbecomes a gentle guidance, allowing us to look at the situation from a securedistance. Through these visual tools, we can uncover signals that our logicalminds usually hide.
Redefining What it Means to Create
It is natural to feel a bit of hesitation or to ask,"What if I am not an artist?" Most of us grew up in a world that onlyvalues "pretty" results, which often makes us feel like we have tojustify our creativity with a perfect final product. In the therapeutic space,we often talk about "art as therapy", a quote from Edith Kramer. Thismeans the healing power actually lives within the act of creating itself, rather than the skill behind it and the final product.
When we let go of the need for a "perfect"result, we begin to be a bit kinder to ourselves. We allow our subconscious theroom it needs to speak, turning the process into a quiet, gentle explorationwhere there are no mistakes, only discoveries.
A Path Toward Connection
Through art therapy, we learn to take those internalfeelings and turn them into color and shape. These images don’t just start aconversation, but also help us to generate unique metaphors that speak to us.
