About Joey Tam

Joey, LGBTQ counselling Vancouver

Hello!
My name is Joey Tam, I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology from Adler University. I have extensive experience helping clients address their mental health concerns. My experience includes helping students at a post-secondary institution, working in a community service agency and I further developed my counselling skills at a mental health clinic. I have also been working the past several years, supporting the Chinese-speaking and LGBTQ+ community.

As we all have unique life stories, I believe in one's ability to utilize their strengths and resources to overcome obstacles and challenges in life. I adopt a strength-based approach to counselling when helping my clients. As a counsellor, I'm grateful to be trusted to work alongside my clients. I provide counselling services in English, Mandarin and Cantonese to individuals and couples.

Foundation of my approach

Depending on your concerns, goals, and needs, I utilize a variety of clinical approaches and techniques to assist you. Including but not limited to:

Non-judgemental. Empathy. Trust.

The focus of person-centred therapy is always on you and not on any diagnosis or categorization. As a Clinical Counsellor, I provide a climate conducive to personal growth and change. Through empathy and trust, our relationship will be productive, genuine, and non-judgemental. Together, we explore your thoughts and feelings, positive or negative, without the risk of rejection or judgement.

It’s all in your head

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) focuses on the way you think (cognitive) and act (behavioural). CBT helps you to identify the relationship between your thoughts and your feelings. By making small changes to the way you think, you can ultimately change the way you feel.

Building on your strengths

A key component to solution focused therapy is helping you identify your strengths, resources and problem-solving skills. Together we can discover solutions that build on what you are already good at. We will utilize your existing strengths and skills as a basis for problem-solving and growth.

Mindfulness. Distress Tolerance. Emotional Regulation. Interpersonal Effectiveness

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) helps people to improve and regulate their emotions, create more tolerance of distress and teach the person to be more mindful and present while improving communication and the ability to interact with others.

Working with your Emotions

Emotion-focused therapy (EFT) is a therapeutic approach based on the premise that emotions are key to identity. According to EFT, emotions are also a guide for individual choice and decision making. EFT is tested and proven for couples therapy, but it is also used to address individual depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress (EFIT – Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy)

Improving marital relationships

The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to disarm conflicting verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy; and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.

Processing the trauma

EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories.
