About Yili Lai

Yili, Perinatal and Identity Counsellor.

Hi, I'm Yili. Reaching out for support can sometimes feel uncertain and vulnerable, and I deeply respect your strength in taking this step. Therapy is a meaningful and sometimes difficult journey, and it would be a privilege to walk alongside you.

Before becoming a counsellor, I spent many years working as a NICU nurse, supporting families during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Those experiences, along with my own journey through mental health challenges, shaped my belief in approaching people with understanding, acceptance, and without judgment. Growing up between cultures as a Chinese immigrant in Polynesian Fiji Islands gave me a deep understanding of navigating identity and belonging, and the particular complexity that carries when culture and identity intersect.

In my counselling work, I have a particular interest in perinatal mental health, including postpartum depression and anxiety, and support individuals, couples, and families navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, intersectionality, identity, and relationship challenges. My approach is person-centred and integrative, drawing from humanistic therapy, CBT, ACT, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).

I am dedicated to supporting you as you navigate challenges and move toward greater peace, happiness, and meaning in your life.

Non-judgemental. Empathy. Trust.

The focus of person-centred therapy is always on you and not on any diagnosis or categorization. As a Clinical Counsellor, I provide a climate conducive to personal growth and change. Through empathy and trust, our relationship will be productive, genuine, and non-judgemental. Together, we explore your thoughts and feelings, positive or negative, without the risk of rejection or judgement.

It’s all in your head

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) focuses on the way you think (cognitive) and act (behavioural). CBT helps you to identify the relationship between your thoughts and your feelings. By making small changes to the way you think, you can ultimately change the way you feel.

Working with your Emotions

Emotion-focused therapy (EFT) is a therapeutic approach based on the premise that emotions are key to identity. According to EFT, emotions are also a guide for individual choice and decision making. EFT is tested and proven for couples therapy, but it is also used to address individual depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress (EFIT – Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy)
